Jiggly Jelly Pattern

This month for Lilla Rogers' MATS Boot Camp we were asked to create a pattern design inspired by a classic dessert, Jello! or gelatin. It was lots of fun to look at all the creative and sometimes bizarre ways people use Jello. Now, I must admit a horrible secret. I hate Jello. But every year on the Fourth of July my family makes Jello treats, its tradition. So I wanted to convey a bit of that summer time feel with my pattern.

The Unveiling!

Finally I can share with you what I have been working so hard on! During this long and very cold winter I have been creating a short illustrated story based on the Danish fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." It is my humorous take on the story, presented in a web comic-esk format.

Enjoy!

Cuckoo For Cuckoo Clocks!

Back in December I signed up for Lilla Rogers' MATS Boot Camp as a good opportunity to strengthen and update my portfolio. As I have been feeling a bit of Artist's block lately. Our first assignment was to mock up a design for a cell phone case based on cuckoo clocks.

I ended up going with the idea of cog wheels from the inside of the clocks themselves. I may have gotten a little carried away with drawing them while I was sketching. :)

Heres a link to see the rest of my class' amazing work! Boot Camp Gallery

You can buy the phone case in the my Society6 store!

Tale As Old As Time

Fall is finally here, even though the official date of fall is not for another week. But everywhere I go there is pumpkin spice this and halloween that. Soon it will be time to sign up for the christmas art markets. All of this makes me a bit sad. Don't get me wrong I do like fall, all the coziness of it, but summer is my favorite season. I am sad to see it go. Plus there are changes on the horizon for me as well. Hopefully I will have news for you all soon! In the meantime I have been working on a fanart of my favorite fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast. When I say my favorite I mean, I try to read every iteration of the tale I can get my hands on, or see every movie I possibly can. Obsessed. Maybe. Though, I do branch out to many of the other fairy tales as well. You could say that they are my genre.
Enjoy!
And get some of that pumpkin spice it really is tasty!

The Patterns of Summer

The long hot days of summer are upon us. I spent my favorite holiday, the Fourth of July, at the beach this year. It was nice to relax and put my toes in the sand for a while. Especially since it is looking like the rest of my summer is jam packed with events, and important things to get done. Including moving into a new apartment, with fingers crossed a washer and dryer. But in the meantime I have created two new patterns in honor of our small summertime friends, or not so much friends depending on who you are. ;)

Gender Bender Star Trek

Happy Summer all! I hope you all had a good Solstice. This summer my girl friend and I are attempting to watch the entire first series of Star Trek. It is a fabulous show with all the greatness of classic television. This has lead me to start a series of gender bender portraits of the main characters as my version of fan art.

In addition to this I am working on The Tempest with DNA Theatre this summer. I will give you more updates as the summer progresses.

Goldilocks Planets

Thanks in part to my parents I have a great fascination with space. So, the other week when I came across an article about the discovery of three new planets, that were considered in habitable zones. I had to make a piece.

Subway Dogs

Recently, I read about these dogs in Russia that ride the subway daily into the city to find food. Then the ride the subway back, home again at night. This is a fascinating example of adaptation and growth. Plus I love dogs and I think that they are intelligent animals. This illustration is my homage to these courageous dogs.

A Zig To The Right Zag To The Left

Wow has it been a fast few weeks. I feel like I have have gotten very little done to post for you all. So, I have a small pattern for you. I tried something new, incorporating a background into my pattern to see what that would do. I like the effect I got. There may not be another post for a little while. I have started a big new project, which I am going to be secretive about for now. Details will come later. Plus work has picked up since the summer months are almost here. But I will try my very best to have something for you again soon. Enjoy!

The Journey Continues

You may have already guessed by now I really like fish and drawing fish. They tend to pop up randomly in my doodles and work. Fish are a good to doodle when I am not sure what to draw or am a little stuck on a project. So a few weeks ago I went to the Baltimore Aquarium, a place dear to my heart. If you haven't been you you should go. I advise going in the evening, because you can catch the sloth out and about at that time. And as you can tell this piece was inspired by my trip!

The Deep Dark

I have also been working diligently on updating my Etsy shop with new paper cut cards. I wanted to add more variety to the types of cards I am carrying. I have also added two spring holiday related cards. My plans is to build a large shop inventory of different types of cards, for all events.
Here is a preview of some of the cards I added.

Patterns for Monday

Happy Monday all, I know it is hard to get back into the flow of the work week. Especially, after a weekend as exciting as the Superbowl. So I have some new patterns to share with you, to get you off and started on the week.
I feel as though I have been a bit 'lax in my life updates over the past couple months. I am working part time now as I have probably said in other posts. The Maryland Science Center had an opening in November and I was lucky enough to see the posting for it. So I now work three to four times a week with a wonderful bunch of creative/ science-y people. This has both hindered and helped my art making. It hinder's it because I most defiantly have less time. But it has been much more of a help because, I've purchased my first new sketch book since spring and have started filling it quickly. I feel more interested in the pieces I am working on and I have an overall more positive attitude toward my art. Also this Christmas, I received money from the bank that I've been saving since I was twelve and first started working a paper route. (I know right, so old school.) With that money I was able to update much of my tech for my illustrator self. As you have probably seen my watercolors look three hundred times better. New scanners are the best!

That's life for now. I plan on working on art through the spring and concentrating on my personal work. Just seeing were life takes me. Nothing super big, maybe take this year a bit easier than last.
Enjoy!

Swords

This is a redo of the last piece I did. I didn't feel like I did it justice. It has been a while since I was able to complete a finished thought in my work. I feel like this piece has accomplished that, which makes me very happy.

Art Update of Awesome!

This piece is the first of a triptych or a short little comic. Which ever you prefer to call it. I wanted to work more with a character and develop a story around them. I've been a bit slow with updates lately, things around here have been kinda hard. It was a slow summer and financially we weren't were we thought we were going to be. So I have been feeling a bit lost in my own work. There is a huge pressure to try every thing to make my work make money. But I am starting to think that I do not want to work that way. I really just want to focus in on my work to get it to a place I am happy with and that other people are happy to buy. This is what I will be dedicating my fall too. Less random projects and more long involved focused projects.
I'm excited. :)
